Chickweed is a cooling and soothing herb that relieves itching, promotes healing and has anti-rheumatic properties.
It contains triterpene saponins, hentiacontanol, coumarins, mucilage, phytosterols, tocopherols, gamma-linoleic acid, minerals, flavonoids (mainly apigenin C-glycosides and rutin), organic acids (carboxylic acids) and vitamin C.
Internally, chickweed is used for rheumatism as well as chest infections. In homeopathy it is used against joint inflammation as well as rheumatism.
When liquidised it is included with other herbs and vegetables as a tonic juice.
It is also used in salads and cooked as a vegetable.
Externally, it is a superb herb to use for puritus and itchy skin, eczema, acne, haemorrhoids, varicose veins, psoriasis, inflammation, ulcers, vaginitis, urticaria, boils, abscesses, allergies and other skin problems.
The vulnerary properties of the herb are also most useful in treating wounds. It also has cell-proliferating properties, useful in speeding-up the healing process.
Although the anti-itching and healing effect of this herb is sometimes attributed to the saponins contained, the actual mechanism is unknown but can possibly be a cortico-mimetic activity.
This herb is not often used but its excellent healing action makes it a must in any healing cream.
