Methionine

Methionine is one of the essential amino acids, the basic building blocks from which proteins in the body are constructed. Methionine cannot be produced within the body, and must be obtained from the diet or via supplementation. Dietary sources include meat, fish milk and cheese. Significant losses in methionine may occur during food processing. Methionine supplementation of vegetarian diets may be appropriate in some cases.

Methionine is essential for normal growth and metabolism. In addition to its role in protein formation methionine plays a vital role in the formation of:

* Antioxidants protecting the body against free radical damage, which has been implicated in the pathogenesis of a variety of diseases, including cardiovascular disease and cancer.

* Chemical messengers responsible for normal brain function, malfunction of which may result in depression.

* Cartilage components in joints.

* In addition, methionine promotes normal liver function (improved bile flow, reduced fat deposition, inhibition of gallstone formation), and the detoxification of toxic substances to which the body may have been exposed (e.g. industrial chemicals, pesticides).

Depression:

Several clinical trial studies have shown methionine to be a safe, effective antidepressant with a rapid onset of action and few side effects.

Osteoarthritis:

Methionine can significantly improve joint mobility and reduce pain in patients with osteoarthritis; the efficacy of methionine has been shown in trials to be comparable to conventionally used NSAIDs, without the adverse effects associated with the latter.

Liver disorders:

Liver Disease:

Clinical trial studies have shown supplementation with methionine to be of benefit for patients with alcoholic liver disease.

Paracetamol poisoning:

Oral administration of methionine is effective as an antidote for paractamol overdose induced liver poisoning.

Are there adverse effects from taking Methionine?

Methionine is generally well tolerated, but may rarely cause nausea or vomiting. There are no reported drug interactions.

How much Methionine should you take?

The RDA for methionine is 13mg/Kg/day, equivalent to approximately 900mg per day for a 70kg adult (the RDA is higher for infants and children).
