Psyllium is often prescribed to relieve constipation. It may also be prescribed for treatment of diarrhoea and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Psyllium is a natural soluble fibre derived from the husks of a seed grain. It absorbs liquid in the intestines and swells to form a soft, bulky stool. The increased bulk of the stool stimulates bowel activity and triggers the urge to defecate. Psyllium has also been shown in studies to improve the ratio of HDL (ogoodo) cholesterol to LDL (obado) cholesterol in the blood. For this reason, it is sometimes prescribed as part of a program to reduce high cholesterol levels before resorting to drug therapy.
For adults and children over 6 years of age, take 1-4 capsules one to three times daily. Always take with a full 25 cl. (8 oz.) glass of water, and follow with another full glass. Onset of effect, usually 12 to 24 hours. In some cases, up to three days.
Keep out of reach of children. Women who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy should consult their doctor before taking nutritional supplements. Do not use if you have symptoms of intestinal ulceration, stenosis, or disabling adhesions. Before taking Psyllium, tell your doctor if you have had any unusual or allergic reaction to laxatives. Make sure that your doctor knows if you are on any special diet. Do not take any other medicine within 2 hours of taking Psyllium. Drink 6-8 eight-ounce glasses of water every day.
