Linseed Oil

Flaxseed Oil / Linseed Oil

The seeds from flax (botanical name: Linum Usitatissimum) create vegetable oil called flax seed oil (also known as linseed oil). Flax seed oil is one of the oldest oils and has been used for centuries. The flax seeds are edible, and are one of the most concentrated plant sources for omega 3 fats.

Eating 1-2 tablespoons of ground flax seeds daily is an alternative to fish oil supplements for vegetarians and vegans, and for those concerned about high levels of heavy metals in fish.

Flaxseed oil is usually taken in capsules.

Flax seed's main nutritional benefits are contained in its lignans and omega 3 fatty acids. Lignans benefit the heart and have anti-cancer properties. Omega 3s, often in short supply in populations with low fish diets, promote heart health by reducing cholesterol, blood pressure and plaque formation.

Some of the benefits include:

* Anti-inflammatory
* Natural laxative
* Helps glucose control in diabetics
* Softens dry skin
* Reducing psoriasis
* Lowering Cholesterol
* Lowers Risk of breast cancer
* Protects against cardiovascular disease
* Reduce blood pressure
* Kidney disease prevention
* Decrease menopause symptoms
* Helps with brittle nails and dry hair
* Relieves acne or eczema due to lack of omega-3
* Provides magnesium, to reduce the severity of asthma

Flaxseed is also a good source of nutrition:

* Rich in alpha linoleic acid
* Lignans
* Fibre
* Omega-3 fatty acids
* Potassium

Flax seed has very high fibre and low carbohydrate content, making it a suitable diet food. Dieters are found to be satisfied after its consumption.
