Brewers Yeast

Brewer's yeast is known for its ability to kill bacteria and promote the production of certain types of white blood cells. It has been used since antiquity, in all probability, both for the preparation of alcoholic beverages and as a medication.

Brewer's yeast can be found growing in the wild throughout the world. It is, in fact, an independently living plant, but was not recognized as such until the nineteenth century. Its effectiveness as a health remedy was first confirmed in 1886.

Brewer's yeast is believed to be an effective remedy for:

* Appetite loss
* Bronchitis
* Colds
* Cough
* Eczema, boils, acne
* Indigestion
* Sore throat
* Tendency to infection

Supplemental brewer's yeast is often taken as a powder, or as capsules or tablets. Premium grade brewer's yeast powder can contain as much as 60 mcg of chromium per tablespoon (15 grams). When doctors recommend brewer's yeast they will often suggest 1-2 tablespoons (15-30 grams) of this high-potency bulk product per day. Remember, if it is not bitter, it is not likely to be real brewer's yeast and therefore will not contain biologically active chromium. In addition, primary grown yeast (i.e., that grown specifically for harvest, as opposed to that recovered in the brewing process) may not contain GTF.
